Native Inventions
Long before European colonisers came to Australia, the Aboriginals
already had handy inventions that they used to hunt, gather, defend
themselves, meet their daily needs and provide entertainment or were
used in Aboriginal rituals.
Aborigines were thought to be one of the first to have used ground edges
in stone cutting tools to grind seeds. What Aborigines already used as
everyday tools, took other societies much longer in developing.
Another Aboriginal invention is the Boomerang. Made of wood and
resembling a stick, it’s made up of complex aerodynamics and uses the
laws of physics and wind pressure to lift it into the air. There are
many types of the Boomerang and these were used for multiple purposes.
Some boomerang can even return to its owner, but skill is needed to
achieve this effect.
The Woomera is a type of spear-thrower that is attached to the spear to
give it speed over distance when thrown. It was said to have been the
fastest weapon in the world until the self-loading rifle was invented
and took the title.
Last but not least, the Aborgines invented the Digeridoo. It is an
indigenous wind musical instrument native to Australia made from the
Eucalypts tree.
